Leadership in the vertical race world cup
Kilian Jornet continues to be in great shape and beat Rémi Bonnet and Anton Palzer in the vertical race held in Switzerland this morning. With this victory, the Catalan athlete has become World Cup leader in its vertical race mode.
The 3 km-vertical race of this morning, with a total climb of 668 m, was held in the framework of the Alpiniski, which is also hosting the Ski Mountaineering European Championships. For the first time this year, not all the races held this weekend scored towards the continental title, but only the Individual Race, which took place yesterday, and the Sprint, to be held tomorrow. This year, the Vertical Race scored towards the Ski Mountaineering World Cup.
The format of today's race was a bit different from the usual one, and skiers set out one at a time in descending order according to their position in the World Cup rankings. As Jornet explained: "In today's race we had no references as to the rivals’ performance, so there was no strategy to follow. We all had to give our best, from beginning to end. I set out the last one and after 250m I was told I was 30 seconds behind. Towards the end I felt fine and so I fastened the pace a bit and I eventually won. I am very happy with this victory in a different format and with the weekend." Jornet finally crossed the finish line with a time of 22'39'' ahead of Rémi Bonnet (23'08 '') and Anton Palzer (23'09 '').
