Jornet wins the transcavallo and consolidtes lead in world cup
Kilian Jornet was the fastest this Friday in the individual event at the Transcavallo, the penultimate event in the mountain skiing World Cup. He demonstrated his good form by completing the circuit, in excellent condition thanks to the recent snowfall, in 01:50.17, faster than second and third placed Anton Plazer and Michele Boscacci.
Jornet crossed the line alone, 43 seconds ahead of Plazer, in a race he described as “highly technical” because of its route through the forest.
“The race was very technical with downhills in the forest and five uphill stretches,” he said. In the first three ascents Jornet was part of a group of five which included Plazer and Boscacci. But on the fourth ascent he broke away on his own, ensuring victory.
“My strategy was to hang in there during the first part and in the fourth I managed to gain an advantage and that let me take the downhills calmly,” he explained.
This victory, the third this season, gives Jornet a total of 380 points in the general ranking, 60 more than Boscacci, and consolidates his lead in the individual category in the World Cup.
“I’m very happy because it’s been a very positive season. It’s my best year in the individual category and, furthermore, the level is very high this year,” he said.
As a result, the Mondolé Ski Alp (Italy), the last event of the championship which will be held on March 18-20, will be decisive in deciding who wins the World Cup.
Before that, Jornet will compete in the Altitoy (February 27) and the Pierra Menta (March 9-12), both European mountain skiing classics.
